Ray Dean Reese diagnosed with cancer

Today, the Singing News posted a press release stating that Ray Dean Reese, award-winning bass vocalist for the Kingsmen Quartet, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Here is a snippet from the official press release:

“Ray and his doctors are currently evaluating treatment options and while a definitive course of action has not been finalized, Ray is very optimistic about the future. Test results show that it is contained to one area.

“I have the utmost confidence in the medical specialists I’m working with,” says Ray. “But more importantly, my confidence in God is what will carry me through. We’ll take one day at a time together, and I’m asking that whatever His will for me might be, may it bring glory and honor to Him.”

The Kingsmen will maintain their full touring schedule—and Ray plans to be on the bus every time it departs from Asheville, North Carolina. “Every care will be taken to enable me to be on the road with the guys,” says Ray.”

I ask that you join me in prayer for Ray and his wife, Carolyn, as they maneuver through this unforeseen trial. In the midst of the health experiences Carolyn faced a few months back, fans were asked to pray for the family. Now, with Ray Dean’s diagnosis, fans are asked to pray fervently on his and his family’s behalf.

Saturday Catch-Up

Hello, everyone! I’m sorry for the lack of posts recently. I have been busy with a variety of school, church, and family activities that I’ve not been completely able to just clear my mind for this blog’s sake. But I do promise a concert review & some album reviews coming up this week! In the meantime, here are some of this week’s noteworthy items:

  • Kevin McManus was admitted to the hospital last week with serious medical issues. And Singing News learned this week that the Nashville producer has 11 kidney stones (8 on left, 3 on right), pancreatitis, and pneumonia. The family asks for prayers on his behalf.
  • The Collingsworth Family released the track list for their new release for Stow Town records, Part of the Family. Here are the titles:

God’s Family – Lanny Wolfe
Tell The Mountain – Lee Black, Sue Smith, Kenna West
Jesus Is All I Need – Marty Millikin
At Calvary – William Newell
Nothing’s Worrying Me – Marty Funderburk, Jerry Kelso
That’s The Place I’m Longing to Go – Robert M. Batton
I Pray – Lyn Rowell, Wendy Wills
Just Another Rainy Day – Darryl Williams, Jerry Kelso
I Found It All – Wayne Haun, Helga Kaefer
Joy Unspeakable – Wayne Haun, Caleb Collins
The Resurrection Morn – William J & Gloria Gaither

  • The trio, Eighth Day, learned that their latest single, “May I Never Get over the Cross,” has become their first Top 10 song! It’s seated at #7 on the July Singing News charts. Congratulations from a fellow South Carolinian!
  • The Dills have received much attention this week in the Southern Gospel blogosphere. Both Wes Burke and Steve Eaton have reviewed their latest album, God Is in Control, while Wes has a detailed review of one of the group’s latest concerts. All three are worthy reads!
  • Be looking for a (late!) review of Mark Bishop’s latest album, I Still Need Him, as well as the kick-off to the “Classic Concerts” feature, Fire on Stage Live!, by the Paynes. These will be featured this next week, along with a review of tonight’s concert in Pickens, SC.

Video of the Week:

While searching for older videos on YouTube, I came across rare footage from a 1988 Gold City concert. Here is perhaps the best of the four videos. The songs are “Shouting Ground” and “Midnight Cry”, both featuring Ivan Parker, but with group introductions between them.

Here are the other performances:

You Gotta Live It & Movin’ Up

John Saw & Ezekiel Saw the Wheel

Holy Anointing.

Saturday News & Notes

Hello, everyone!! I’m still here. Personal happenings + Southern Gospel happenings make for an interesting week. Here are some news items to “catch up” over the week’s happenings as well as what’s ahead for next week on this blog.

Newsworthy:

1. Daywind Records + Wilburn & Wilburn- Daywind Records announced their signing Wilburn & Wilburn to their roster of artists. The duo, consisting of Jonathan Wilburn & his son, Jordan, will be making their way into the studio to begin work on their Daywind debut. Also, (h/t Daniel), Jay Parrack has joined the group on selected dates. Due to ministerial obligations, Parrack will appear at venues aside from Sundays.

April 2011 Singing News

2. April 2011 Singing News- Over to the right, you’ll see the front cover as it appears for the April 2011 Singing News. The cover article features road stories from some of Southern Gospel’s top names including Tracy Stuffle, Connie Hopper, Les Beasley, Tim Lovelace, and several others are featured in the magazine’s April 2011 edition. This is unique considering that it’s the first time (to my knowledge) that the magazine has featured road stories as the cover article.

3. Brian Free & Assurance- Congratulations, guys, for your third #1 song on the SN charts! Their latest release, “Never Walk Alone”, captures the #1 spot for May 2011.

On the Blog Calendar:

Concert Review: The Perrys (March 27, 2011)

CD Reviews: Joy in the Journey- McKameys (March 29, 2011), He’s Alive- Talley Trio (April 1, 2011)

In addition to these concert & cd reviews, I will be posting other items as I discover them.

Well, that pretty much wraps up this news edition. Here’s a video from Gold City Quartet singing the classic “When I Get Carried Away.” The lineup is Dan Keeton (tenor), Craig West (lead), Daniel Riley (baritone), Tim Riley (baritone), and Bryan Elliott (piano). This concert appearance was captured at Lake Gibson Church of the Nazarene in Lakeland, Florida.

Saturday News & Notes

I trust everyone has had a successful start to 2011. Even though it’s the first week, there have been some news items & notes of interest already for this year.

Health Concerns:

1. Continue to pray for Tracy Stuffle as he experienced some time in the ER this week. The leg from which they performed surgery back in August received a strong amount of infection which is being treated with antibiotics. Last night, Libbi Stuffle reported that they (she & Tracy) traveled to the ER while Matthew Holt, Joseph Habedank, & Bryan Walker performed the Perrys’ concert as a trio. Keep the entire group in your prayers.

2. Please pray for the Unthank family as they prepare for funeral services this Monday, following the death of Susan Unthank. They have asked that all memorials & contributions be made to a special fund for medical bills.  In the meantime, keep the family in your prayers as they make this transition.

Recording News:

1. The Gaither Vocal Band has been in the studio working on a children’s project slated for release later this year. Considering how big the Bill Gaither Trio’s 2 children’s projects were in sales, the excitement is building for this release.

2. The McKameys have been in the studio this week preparing for a new album to be released in early spring. This album follows up the highly successful, The Message, which garnered 2 #1 songs, “I Keep Praying” & “The Shepherd’s Point of View.”

Concert Reviews:

1. T&T Promotions New Years Sing- Spartanburg, SC. Artists on the program include the McKameys, Primitive Quartet, Diplomats, & Inspirations. Be looking for a review on Monday, January 10.

2. Crabb Family Reunion- Greenville, SC. I will be attending a Crabb Family Reunion concert a week from today (Jan. 15) in Greenville, SC. Be looking for a review the following Monday, January 17.

Video of the Week:

Here is a selection from a recent concert with Brian Free & Assurance performing their latest hit single, “Never Walk Alone.” Thanks to DinanaSN for the use of this video!

Christmas & Commentary: December

I trust everyone is having an enjoyable late fall/early winter this December. I have several exciting things planned for the blog in the upcoming weeks leading to Christmas and New Year’s Day. If you’ve been watching the calendar, you know that Christmas is around the corner. Since Southern Gospel music fits hand-in-glove with the Christian holidays, I believe that it is in best interest to feature some classic Christmas music that radio or record companies are less likely to push at other times of the year.

I have one more cd review to be published this week, Stories & Songs: Talley Trio. Beginning next week, I will be featuring different Christmas tunes including classic carols and modern collaborations from some of the best in Southern Gospel music. In addition to the individual features, there will also be 2 smaller Christmas album reviews. These reviews will be smaller than my normal reviews. The two projects will be Because It’s Christmas by Jason Crabb and It’s Christmas by the Kingdom Heirs. These 2 albums have much significance to receive full reviews rather than possible mentions in the song features.

Following the Christmas season, I will be posting the week after Christmas sharing glimpses into the happenings of 2010 as well as the biggest hits & misses at radio. All chart summations as well as the happenings of 2010 will be taken from the Singing News. All of the Southern Gospel Review 2010 will be Dec. 26-31, 2010.

In the meantime, have a safe & productive Christmas season!

Southern Gospel in the Grammy Awards

The highest awards for American music, the Grammy Awards, will be presented on February 13, in Los Angeles, CA. These awards cover every genre of music including Southern Gospel. The award that recognizes Southern Gospel is titled, the “Best Country, Southern, or Bluegrass Gospel Album of the Year.” Several Southern Gospel artists have received the award including the Happy Goodmans, Gaither Vocal Band, and, most recently, Jason Crabb. For these awards, getting a nomination is nearly as good as actually winning the award. Those nominated in the past include the Crabb Family, Karen Peck & New River, and Triumphant Quartet. Listed below are the nominees for the 2010 Best Country, Southern, or Bluegrass .

Gospel Album of the Year

1. Times like These: Austins Bridge (Daywind Records)

2. The Reason: Diamond Rio (Word)

3. Expecting Good Things: Jeff & Sheri Easter (Spring Hill Music Group/She Loved Music)

4. Journey On: Ty Herndon (FUNL Music)

5. Live! at Oak Tree: Karen Peck & New River (Daywind Records)

Notice the presence of Southern Gospel music in the artists and record companies. Even though several fans wouldn’t classify Austins Bridge as 100% Southern Gospel, they do record for a Southern Gospel label and have enjoyed all radio singles charting on the Singing News Top 40 songs. Does anyone know if this is Jeff & Sheri Easter’s first Grammy nomination? If yes or no, please let me know. This is also Karen Peck & New River’s third nomination. The group has been nominated with their freshman & sophomore Daywind releases, Journey of Joy & Ephesians One. Congratulations to all artists nominated!

**On a side note, here is Karen Peck Gooch’s recognition of her group’s nomination:

“”We are so excited to announce that our latest project ‘Live at Oak Tree’ is nominated for a Grammy!!! Congrats to our friends, Jeff and Sheri Easter for their nomination!!! L.A. here we come!!”"

NQC Live! Volume 10 Highlights- Track Listing Released

NQC Live! Volume 10

Since 1999, recording companies have pulled various mainstage appearances from the National Quartet Convention to form a highlights cd/dvd set. Many special appearances were captured and placed on the albums since it started. Glen Payne’s Call-In performance of “I Won’t Have to Cross Jordan Alone”, “I’ll Fly Away” by the Anthony Burger Pianorama, “Suppertime” by George Younce & Signature Sound, and Quartets by Greater Vision, are all selections from the conventions of the past. For NQC Live! Volume 10, Crossroads Music has provided an excellent conglomeration of the best of the best in Southern Gospel music. Some of these artists to appear are brand new to the highlights series, some for several years, and others returning after years of absence.

Here is the list, according to Springside Music:

  1. Heaven in the House- Greenes
  2. My Soul Is Firmly Anchored-Legacy Five
  3. I  Know- Collingsworth Family
  4. Then I Met the Master-Booth Brothers
  5. My Heart Knows-Crist Family
  6. Love Came Calling- Triumphant Quartet
  7. A New Thing- Brian Free & Assurance
  8. On the Authority-Hoppers
  9. One Day, the Next Day-Down East Boys
  10. He Ain’t Never Done Me Nothin’ but Good-Isaacs
  11. He’s Alive-Talley Trio
  12. He Locked the Gates-Kingdom Heirs

These selections will be included on the bonus free cd that comes in the package. Selections, not included on the cd but on the dvd are “I Can’t Even Walk” (Shawn Porter & Choir); Tribute to Tony Greene; “I’ve Been Blessed” (Tribute Quartet);“I Want My Stage to Be an Altar” (Akins); Instrumental- Dove Brothers Band; “Too Much to Gain to Lose” (Bowling Family); Dennis Swanberg: Laughter, Fair & Balanced; Glenn Austin Camera Man Comedy.

I am planning a review of the project to be posted sometime near the project’s release date, December 21. Final thoughts about the song selection and critique of the project will be issued then. In the meantime, prospective buyers can pre-order the project at Crossroads or at Springside.

Soldiers: Past and Present

Since the United States of America was founded out of struggles for freedom and equality, we have developed a strong appreciation for those who have fought for the things we all hold dear. On Veteran’s Day, we honor both those who have fought for our freedom to the end of their lives as well as those who have fought and are abide with us today. Each soldier, whether on the field or off the field, has endangered himself or herself for the safety of millions of others. By keeping the conflict on foreign soil, you have brought peace to those back home in the states.

We applaud you, past and current veterans, for your sacrifice for us United States citizens to walk in peace and prosperity. It is by your forfeit that each child can sleep each night without the fear of being attacked by foreign invaders. We are able to face each dawn with the bright hope of attaining a world with no limitations. One person cannot hold another person’s thoughts captive because of the absence for which has been fought in a distant presence. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

In a recent concert, Karen Peck Gooch sang “The Star Spangled Banner” off the cuff. Out of appreciation for those who have served for the United States in some aspect of the military, listen with me as Karen Peck Gooch powerfully performs “The Star Spangled Banner.”

*A special thank you to DinanaSN for the use of this video.

Dixie Melody Boys Holding Auditions

Since Jonathan Price joined the Dove Brothers Quartet earlier this week, Ed O’Neal, owner & bass vocalist of the Dixie Melody Boys, is seeking to hire a replacement. Here are Ed’s words from the official announcement:

”We certainly wish Jonathan the best in his new role with the Dove Brothers,” says Ed O’Neal. “He’s a fine singer and I know he’ll do well there.

“But you can’t have a Southern Gospel quartet without a good tenor singer—and that’s exactly what we’re looking for. I invite any tenor that is seriously interesting in auditioning to contact us at (919) 345-0264. I’ll be looking to hear from you.”
