This morning, the Singing News magazine revealed the hosts for this year’s fan awards program. Hosts will be Gerald Wolfe (Greater Vision) and Gordon Mote (Gaither Homecoming pianist). Here is a portion from the original press release:

“Gordon Mote and Gerald Wolfe have been announced as the hosts of the Singing News Fan Awards/SGMA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The duo will anchor the event that is scheduled for Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at the D.P. Celebrity Theatre at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.”

Singing News has chosen a wide variety of program hosts for several years including Mark Lowry, Janet Paschal, Ivan Parker, Karen Peck Gooch, and several others. This is not Gerald Wolfe’s first appearance as the host, but it is Gordon’s first. Fans will likely be treated to numerous jokes pinged off each other. Tickets for the Fan Awards & SGMA induction ceremony are on sale for $75.00 ($55.00 for Dollywood Season passholders) from the SGMA at (865) 908-4040.

The Kingdom Heirs Announce Contest Winners..

In correlation with their new release, We Will Stand Our Ground, the Kingdom Heirs have been promoting a contest on their Facebook page. The giveaways were all associated with their new release. You can visit their “official” like page on Facebook for more information about the group and their new project.

Here are the official winners:

This giveaway is the type that Southern Gospel needs more. People love free or nearly free deals on merchandise, so I’m glad the Kingdom Heirs gave fans a venue to try for it. There’s no telling what kind of publicity this could form for other groups. Either way, congratulations to all the entrants & winners in the Kingdom Heirs’ contest. From the songs I’ve heard, it is surely a winner!

Since the project doesn’t “officially” release to the digital age until May 1 & to retail on May 17, here are clips of the project on Crossroads Music’s website.

2011 Dove Awards: Southern Gospel’s Wins

Editor’s Note: Jason Crabb also picked up the award for Traditional Gospel Song of the Year for “Go Tell It on the Mountain”, from his Because It’s Christmas cd.

Yesterday, as I reported the Dove Awards were presented in Atlanta, GA, at the historic Fox Theatre. Because of Southern Gospel’s large presence in this year’s awards, many Southern Gospel artists were on hand to continue Christian music.

Here are the highlights of the evening:

Jason Crabb- By far, he has been the most talked-about soloist in Southern Gospel music this year. Last year, he claimed a Grammy Award (Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album) and a Dove Award (Country Song of the Year), but this year he walked away with 2 more Dove awards. Jason’s song, “Joseph”, took home Inspirational Song of the Year, and his song, “Sometimes I Cry”, was awarded Song of the Year for all of Christian music. It’s been well over 20 years since a remotely related Southern Gospel artist took the award for Song of the Year in the Dove Awards. This was the shock of the evening considering the other nominees, especially big winners like Franscesca Battistelli, Chris August, and TobyMac were nominated in the same category.

Here are excerpts from the acceptance speech for “Sometimes I Cry.”

Gerald Crabb stated, “Thank You Jesus Christ for giving me the song. The best singer I ever heard sung it, my son Jason.”

Jason Crabb shared, “He’s one of the best song-writers on the planet and I’m so glad he’s my Pop. God bless you all.”

Gaither Vocal Band- Because they’ve captured Southern Gospel Album of the Year for the past 2 years, it’s no surprise that they’d win it again this year. Since they’ve explored new vocal arrangements, the Gaither Vocal Band has captured the attention of diverse Christian music fans. Their win for Southern Gospel Song of the Year was a bit surprising considering its stand against the likes of Ernie Haase & Signature Sound & the Triumphant Quartet, both #1 songs this year on the SN charts.

Gerald Crabb: When the GMA released the Songwriter of the Year nominees, I was a bit surprised to see Wayne Haun & Gerald Crabb’s names among the biggest writers in Christian music. I was more surprised to see Gerald’s, due to the recent level of songs he’s had to record his songs. But, I remembered that he wrote one of the Song of the Year nominees, which could very well explain his nomination. Anyways, Gerald captured the Songwriter of the Year award for the entire field of Christian music. Congratulations to Gerald Crabb, a Southern Gospel songwriter, for winning Christian music’s highest songwriting honor!

If anyone needs evidence of Southern Gospel’s comparison to the other genres in Christian music, last night was a strong supporter. As I said earlier, the Song of the Year has not been a Southern Gospel-directed song since the early 1980s when Sandi Patty won with “We Shall Behold Him.” One may include the other hits like “Via Dolorosa” and “More Than Wonderful”, but she was clearly in the CCM/Inspirational field by then.

Either way, congratulations to all of the Southern Gospel winners in the 2011 GMA Dove Awards! A full list of winners is here.

2011 GMA Dove Awards Tonight

Tonight, many Christian music artists are converging upon the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA, for the 42nd Annual GMA Dove Awards. As far as I’ve seen, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Jeff & Sheri Easter, Triumphant Quartet, Brian Free & Assurance, Sisters, and Janet Paschal are attending the awards ceremonies. The Dove Awards pre-show will be honoring the genre-specific Song of the Year awards. I will try to offer an update on the wins as I often as possible for the Southern Gospel categories.

Ernie Haase & Signature Sound and Janet Paschal will separately be performing. Janet Paschal will join the other nominees for Female Vocalist of the Year in a tribute to Sandi Patty. Also, Brian Free & Assurance performed “Never Walk Alone” at the pre-show.

Refresh to see the winners in the various Southern/Bluegrass/Country Gospel winners!

WINNERS:

Bluegrass Recorded Album of the Year: Singing from the Heart -Dailey & Vincent

Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year: “Mountaintop” -Little Roy & Lizzy Long

Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year: “Joseph” -Jason Crabb

Southern Gospel Recorded Song of the Year: “Better Day” -Gaither Vocal Band

Southern Gospel Recorded Album of the Year: Greatly Blessed -Gaither Vocal Band

Songwriter of the Year: Gerald Crabb

Song of the Year (entire Christian field): “Sometimes I Cry” -Jason Crabb (written by Gerald Crabb)

There are other categories where Southern Gospel artists were nominated including Male Vocalist of the Year, Group of the Year, Artist of the Year, Country Song, etc., and I have covered them as well as possible when the winners were announced. A special thank you to yankeegospelgirl for her help! For a full list of Southern Gospel artists’ nominees, here is the original post.

Commentary: 2011 Absolutely Gospel Ovation Awards

As I posted yesterday evening, Absolutely Gospel presented their annual awards honoring the best in Southern Gospel music in not only the artists, but also the industry members (producer, engineer, etc.). Deon, Chris, and Amy Marie Unthank have hosted these awards for 10 years. Instead of solely fan nominated & voted, the Absolutely Gospel Awards nominees are chosen by their staff and subsequently released for fans to vote.

Highlights of the awards winners & show:

  1. Karen Peck & New River: The group was the “big winners” last year and held the title for the 2011 awards. While they kept the same award numbers, in comparison to last year, the trio received a different slate of awards. Last year, the group won Country Song & Song of the Year for “I Want to Thank You.” This year, the group took home Progressive Song of the Year for “Why Can’t All God’s Children Get Along?”. In 2010, they also received Progressive Album of the Year for No Worries. I suppose we’ll see the group capture stronger nominations next year considering their upcoming album release of Reach Out. One major factor of their award winning is that they captured Fan Favorite Artist for the second consecutive year.
  2. Jeff & Sheri Easter: It’s interesting to note that one of the Country Song of the Year winners captured the award for Song of the Year, just as it happened last year. As evidenced through various awards, Jeff & Sheri Easter are making a strong stride now in Southern Gospel. “Born to Climb” has won awards in the Dove Awards and now in the Absolutely Gospel Ovation Awards. This has to be a career song. In addition to the group awards, Madison Easter, the group’s lead guitarist, won his second consecutive Musician of the Year award. Judging by the audience’s reaction, his  and Devin McGlamery’s hosting abilities were superb.
  3. Joseph Habedank: This young leader in Southern Gospel has developed his talent well, showing strongly in his first award win for being a songwriter. Other nominees included long-time writers like Becky Bowman & Sonya Yeary and Jim Brady, who’ve both experienced award-winning  and #1 songs. This award helps further cement Joseph Habedank’s name among the best current and past writers in Southern Gospel music.
  4. Beyond the Ashes: Anthony Facello’s talented male trio has caught the fans’ attention. Last year, they performed their hit single, “Ready for the Ride”, and people were left predicting they could be the 2011 Breakthrough Artist. That prediction came true for Facello, Monroe, and Rivers. With their recent record contract with Vine Records and their new project releasing, Treasures Unseen, releasing next week, they have truly broken through to the higher realms of Southern Gospel music.
  5. Bowling Family & Hope Bowling: The group captured a win for Country Album of the Year, Shine. However, Kelly Bowling is experiencing a case of laryngitis and stayed home for the evening. Filling in for her was Mike & Kelly’s 11 year-old daughter, Hope Bowling. From statements of various people attending the awards ceremony, she performed excellently and did so with last minute’s notice. Here’s to hoping she’ll be featured a bit more on stage.
  6. Susan Unthank Memorial Award: To honor the matriarch of the Unthank family, Absolutely Gospel developed an award honoring an individual’s contribution to the Southern Gospel industry. While similar to the SN Norcross-Templeton Award, this award honors only females and their consistent involvement in Southern Gospel music. Taking home the award was Beckie Simmons Bates who has worked for many years with artists and concert promoters as a booking agent. Congratulations, Beckie, for receiving recognition for your years of service!

Absolutely Gospel presents an award program specifically different from all others in Southern Gospel. From the award nominations procedures to the actual awards ceremony, they work diligently and separate theirs from the others. Offering live streaming last year was a major advancement, and, while the live stream “fell through at the last minute”, they offered a different notification style for fans unable to attend. Madison Easter & the Unthanks posted each award winner’s name on Twitter & Facebook as the awards were presented.

In addition to these artists, several other artists and family members offered insightful comments about the awards happenings. This was different, especially seeing pictures of people tweeting from the awards ceremony, but it is innovation. Adding these features continues to separate the Absolutely Gospel Awards from the rest, moves I’m sure they’re willing to make.

Thank you, to the staff of Absolutely Gospel for hosting this event, allowing the fans to participate, and keeping Southern Gospel alive in a polished manner.

2011 BMI Christian Music Awards

Yesterday evening, in spite of the Nashville, TN, thunderstorms, a group of Christian musicians and singers and music publishers gathered together for the annual BMI Christian Music Awards. These awards are sponsored by the nationally known publishing company, BMI, Broadcast Music, Inc. Each year, they honor the most-played songs from the previous year’s radio and television airplay results.

This year, Southern Gospel music was presented with several awards. Here are the Song of the Year honorees:

  • “He Locked the Gates”- Kingdom Heirs (Rodney Griffin/Songs of Greater Vision)
  • “It Pays to Pray”- Greater Vision (Rodney Griffin/Songs of Greater Vision)
  • “Life Goes On”- Talley Trio (Marty Funderburk, Gina Boe/Christian Taylor Music)
  • “Stuff of Life”- Booth Brothers (Jim Brady, Barry Weeks, & Tony Wood/Bridge Building Music)
  • “When the Trumpet Sounds” – Triumphant Quartet (Wayne Haun, Joel Lindsey/Hefton Hill Music, Psalmsinger Music, and Universal Music-Brentwood Benson Songs)

In addition to the traditional Song of the Year honors, Rodney Griffin received the award for Christian Songwriter of the Year. BMI presents 3 songwriters each year with this honor, and Rodney Griffin received the award along with 2 other songwriters in Contemporary Christian Music. Congratulations, Rodney!

Though these awards honor the songs’ airplay in 2010, it is quite compelling to see a hit from 2009, “Life Goes On,” be one of the Top 5 played songs according to BMI’s calculations. Another interesting inclusion is “Stuff of Life,” which peaked at radio later in 2009. The airplay results could be from either 2010 exactly or mid-late 2009 to the same period in 2010. Given that all of these songs peaked on radio charts around this time last year or earlier, the first choice would seem reasonable.

Either way, congratulations to all songwriters, artists, and publishing companies for your wins!

Here is a complete list of the winners.

2010 in Review: Awards & Recognitions

Southern Gospel music always shines in its award winnings of the year. Several artists pulled out all stops to win some of the most prestigious awards. In addition to the awards, there were artists who received recognition for their hard work over the years.

In February, Triumphant Quartet, Signature Sound, and Jason Crabb travelled to Los Angeles, CA, for the Grammy Awards. Each artist was nominated for Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album of the Year. Jason Crabb was the winner for his self-titled cd. Even though Triumphant Quartet & Ernie Haase & Signature Sound didn’t win, they were still recognized with certificates and medallions.

Next, the Absolutely Gospel’s 2010 Ovation Awards honored Southern Gospel artists including Karen Peck & New River & the Perrys. Karen Peck Gooch’s group took home Fan Favorite Artist, Song of the Year, Progressive Southern Album, and Country Song. The Perrys also won awards including Traditional Album, Traditional Song, and Album of the Year. After the awards were presented, artists gathered on stage to conduct a tribute to long-time family group, the Singing Cookes. During this special tribute, members of the Isaacs, the Perrys, the Freemans, Jeff & Sheri Easter, and several others sang several of the family’s best known songs.

Southern Gospel always shines at the GMA Dove Awards each April. Jeff & Sheri Easter captured the award win for “Southern Gospel Recorded Song” with “Born to Climb.” Jason Crabb received the award for Country Recorded Song (“Somebody like Me”). The Isaacs took home the award for Favorite Bluegrass Album for Naturally…an Almost A Cappella Collection. And the Gaither Vocal Band was awarded Southern Gospel Recorded Album with their project, Reunited. Special performances of the evening include the Perrys (“If You Knew Him”), Crabb Family (“Through the Fire”), and Sisters (“Blest Be the Tie”), who are featured here.

Southern Gospel’s biggest award program is the annual Singing News Fan Awards. This year, the program moved from NQC to Dollywood. The Booth Brothers received the most awards with wins in Favorite Artist, Favorite Trio, Favorite Tenor, Favorite Lead, Favorite Baritone, and Favorite Album. Other awards highlights were the Perrys’ Song of the Year win for “If You Knew Him”, and Morgan Easter’s win for Favorite Horizon Individual.

Throughout the Singing News Fan Awards, several hardworking individuals were recognized for their contributions to Southern Gospel. These people were inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Those inducted are: Danny Gaither, Arthur Smith, Jan Buckner-Goff, Bill Hefner, Connie Hopper, and Sam Goodman. Near the end of the program, Dolly Parton was presented with the James D. Vaughan Impact Award.

An interesting factor of Southern Gospel is that there are so many awards programs in which its artists can be nominated. Fans can show their appreciation in many ways for whomever they decide. Congratulations to all artists who received awards & nominations.

*Stop by tomorrow for a review of the 2010 Singing News monthly & yearly charts!
