CD: Sunday Shoes, Chris Golden

Sunday Shoes, Chris Golden

As I’ve received several cds & dvds to review, I’ve had a wide range of artists show on the radar. One gentleman, Chris Golden, has released a cd full of Country flavor with some Soul added for a unique spice. The name Golden is synonymous for quality vocals and music choices. Chris’s father, William Lee Golden, has been the baritone for the Oak Ridge Boys for over 40 years, and Chris’s brother, Rusty Golden, is the co-author to #1 hits like “Between 12 and 33” (McKameys) and “I Want to Thank You” (Karen Peck & New River). Here, Chris Golden shares the distinct church influences on his music while providing listeners with a more soothing country vocal.

As stated earlier, the project is infused with strong Country flavor, but also a nice touch of Soul in the mix. For instance, Golden’s vocals are Country to the core, but on the opening track, “When He Set Me Free”, he uses the backing vocals from two of Traditional Gospel’s finest female singers, Angie Primm & Gale Mayes. The Traditional Gospel feel is also given for the album’s title track, “Sunday Shoes”, as well as the Jeff & Sheri Easter cover, “There’s a Higher Power.” The latter song could use more cohesion in the delivery. At times, the music doesn’t flow properly with the lyrics or backing vocals.

In addition to the more soulful sounding songs, Golden picks up some more laid-back numbers, “Live Forever” and “Gospel Road”, the latter previously recorded by the Kingsmen Quartet. Throughout the project, the backing vocals work well mixing with his voice, but, at times, it’s difficult to determine what they’re actually saying. “When He Set Me Free” thrives off the background vocals. They’re heard enough to be heard, but they could be a little more in the mix.

Southern Gospel sees strong influences on the project as well. Golden covers the aforementioned #1 song, “I Want to Thank You.” The vocal arrangement and the musical pace of the song are different from the original by Karen Peck & New River. This song’s pace could benefit from slower treatment (not slower than KP&NR’s), as it seems to be rushed. However, it works well to hear a male vocal throughout the entire song as well as leveled feature and not as much background vocals as the original does.

The clear winner on this project is “A Different Light.” When I heard this tune, it sounded familiar, but I realized it was partially because of who was doing backing vocals and their style. Golden brought in Darrell & Chris Freeman to sing the background vocals on this song, and it creates a strong blend for the listener. Penned by Diane Wilkinson and Rusty Golden, this song shares a unique message of how God delivers from sin and sees us differently afterwards. The strong Southern Gospel flavors come out with this tune and make it highly eligible for Southern Gospel radio.

In his project, Sunday Shoes, Chris Golden explores the basis for his current talents. By revisiting songs with clear Southern Gospel sounds, he automatically catches the attention of longtime Southern Gospel fans. However, the Country saturation to his voice adds an effective raw feeling making the project seem less formal and more inviting to the listener. The strong background vocals enhance his performances while offering a unique contrast (i.e. – the Primm & Mayes duo). More work on the mix could benefit the recording as well as stronger lyrics in the up-tempo department. One song, “You Can’t Do Wrong”, suffers from a lack of spiritual emphasis while maintaining a necessary truth. However, Chris captured each facet of his musical journey on this recording, making an effective and pleasing look at various genres in one cd.

Rating: 8.5/10

Personal Favorites: “Live Forever”, “Gospel Road”, “I Want to Thank You”, “Wide River to Cross”, “A Different Light”, “Sunday Shoes, and “God Knows What.”

Produced by Chris Golden. Track list: When He Set Me Free, Live Forever, Gospel Road, Jordan’s Banks, I Want to Thank You, You Can’t Do Wrong, Wide River to Cross, There’s a Higher Power, A Different Light, God Knows What, Sunday Shoes, and Sweet By and By. SG Product Tables: T-shirts & Vestal Bears

Yesterday, on his blog, Daniel Mount brought up an interesting topic about the moments we look for in a concert. I was thinking of various actions different singers perform during a song (i.e.- McCray Dove & his suit jacket and Peg Bean & her shoes). But, that got me to thinking of the various items (a la souvenirs) from that groups sell at concerts.

Recently, the McKameys started selling monogrammed handkerchiefs at their concerts due to the rise in people asking for Peg’s “pom-pom”, as she calls it. The SGMA has Vestal Bears, and who knows how many groups have sold or continue to sell t-shirts and hats. So, what has been a unique item that you’ve picked up at a group’s product table? Please share in the comments below!

More Than Enough for Tomorrow

On this day, we’ve been reminded of Christ’s fulfilling His Father’s perfect plan. But there is more to this celebration! Christ compels us to share with the lost His glorious Gospel in word whether written, spoken, or sung. Christ broke the bonds of condemnation so we may have life beyond the grave! Now we can be free and face the uncertainty.

“Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future, and life is worth the living just because He lives.” -Bill & Gloria Gaither (“Because He Lives”)

The great reality for the Christian is that he or she is free from bondage by Christ’s redemption. By His redeeming love, Christ lives in us and through us in all circumstances. Truly, Christ is alive!

Day 3: Hope Springs Forth

Even though Christ was crucified and buried, on the first Easter morning, He arose with power over death, hell, and the grave. At last, there is a sufficient way for man to reach heaven, through the perfected atonement. No longer is the law the course for everyday life. The sacrificial Lamb’s resurrection proved that grace is free for each human being to receive.

As we continue on through the today, let us be reminded of the power of Christ’s resurrection. By his bursting forth into new life, so are we given the ability to resurrected from a life of misery and gloom. Christ is alive, not only on the right side of the Father, but also in the hearts of His followers on Earth.

In addition to the story of Christ’s resurrection on the first Easter morn, so are we Christians to tell of the great resurrection of our souls through Christ’s atonement. For truly, in our hearts the Lamb did rise in full power offering us victory. Here Ivan Parker, along with Gold City Quartet, performs these thoughts in the classic, “There Rose a Lamb”, written by Kyla Rowland.

There’s no telling what kind of publicity this could form for other groups. Either way, congratulations to all the entrants & winners in the Kingdom Heirs’ contest. From the songs I’ve heard, it is surely a winner!

Since the project doesn’t “officially” release to the digital age until May 1 & to retail on May 17, here are clips of the project on Crossroads Music’s website.

Day 2: the Seeds of Doubt & Disbelief

When Christ’s followers were told of His crucifixion and death, they were astonished and hid for fear of their lives. Believing that the Roman soldiers would seek His closest followers to kill them next, they stayed hidden but also developed doubt in the middle of the three days. Because their Master seemed to be gone away from them, they started to fear that hope had been lost. Even though Christ had explained the purpose and outline of His death, burial, and crucifixion, they continued to be swayed by fallible humanity. And when Mary Magdalene and the others came to tell them the Lord had risen, they did not believe. According to Mark’s Gospel, the two disciples brought back the report of Christ’s resurrection, but they still did not believe.

This portion speaks to me as an example of patience when the future seems uncertain. Many times, it is difficult to walk through the tempest and keep in remembrance that Christ has gone before us. Just as the disciples had, there are moments when we’ve doubted or did not believe that Christ performed His work or had conquered as He said He would. These are those pauses or moments of reflection where God’s lessons shine the brightest. On this second day, join with me in reminding of the price paid on the original Good Friday to better appreciate what day three holds.

Here, the Tribute Quartet performs a song of reflection, “One Holy Lamb.”

Good Friday: The Beauty of the Cross

Over 2000 years ago, the greatest story held its strongest unfolding for the world to see. Christ, the pure Lamb of God, was to be sacrificed for the sins of man. No words can describe the darkness that veiled the earth when Jesus Christ called out to His Father in despair, proclaiming the words, “It Is Finished.” It was through Christ giving His life for ours that we may walk free today.

If He hadn’t chose the tree of Calvary, there would be no symbol of peace and stability for Christians to gaze upon. This post may seem too late in the day for some, but I would like to call to mind an example of darkness covering the earth. For it was on that cross that Christ was crucified and became the ultimate example of our daily crucifixion. This was one step continued on the journey to true freedom, and the power of the cross transcends all of the realms of our existence.

Watch as the Gaither Vocal Band performs one of my favorite songs about the cross, “The Old Rugged Cross Made the Difference”, written by the great songwriters, Bill and Gloria Gaither.

Join me tomorrow to the second of those three days of anguish and dread.

The Votes Are In- the Fans’ Favorite Singing News Covers

Singing News- May 2011

A couple of months back, the Singing News formed a contest requesting the fans to choose their favorite magazine covers in their history. Though it’s unclear yet which one came out on top, all 5 covers are featured on the May 2011 Singing News, honoring the magazine’s 42-year anniversary.

From Left to Right: Booth Brothers (November 2010), Cathedrals (June 1983), the Cathedrals (September 1999), George Younce & Glen Payne, and Jeff & Sheri Easter (February 2011).

These seem to be interesting picks for the fans because of the major gap in time. Here we have two from the ’80s, one from the ’90s, zero from the 2000s, and 2 from the 2010s. There were some quality cover shots for Singing News, but the fans chose a few studio shots and 2 outside shots. And considering Gold City’s popularity over the years, their interesting covers from mid-80s and mid-1990 seemed to have higher percentages of the magazine’s covers. Also, the historic cover shoot of the first Homecoming taping would seem more likely for fans to choose as well.

The Cathedrals’ and George & Glen’s covers are due largely to their effect on Southern Gospel music all around. Practically everyone knows who Glen & George are without having to say their last names! A few who wouldn’t, I’d venture to say, may compose 1% or less. The Booth Brothers’ cover gained much more exposure because of the back cover with Greater Vision’s faces in the Booth Brothers’ places. Jeff & Sheri’s is a recent outside shot, something that Singing News has shied away from doing.

So, what was your favorite Singing News cover? Was it a studio or an outside shot? Let me know in the comments section.

2011 Dove Awards: Southern Gospel’s Wins

Editor’s Note: Jason Crabb also picked up the award for Traditional Gospel Song of the Year for “Go Tell It on the Mountain”, from his Because It’s Christmas cd.

Yesterday, as I reported the Dove Awards were presented in Atlanta, GA, at the historic Fox Theatre. Because of Southern Gospel’s large presence in this year’s awards, many Southern Gospel artists were on hand to continue Christian music.

Here are the highlights of the evening:

Jason Crabb- By far, he has been the most talked-about soloist in Southern Gospel music this year. Last year, he claimed a Grammy Award (Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album) and a Dove Award (Country Song of the Year), but this year he walked away with 2 more Dove awards. Jason’s song, “Joseph”, took home Inspirational Song of the Year, and his song, “Sometimes I Cry”, was awarded Song of the Year for all of Christian music. It’s been well over 20 years since a remotely related Southern Gospel artist took the award for Song of the Year in the Dove Awards. This was the shock of the evening considering the other nominees, especially big winners like Franscesca Battistelli, Chris August, and TobyMac were nominated in the same category.

Here are excerpts from the acceptance speech for “Sometimes I Cry.”

Gerald Crabb stated, “Thank You Jesus Christ for giving me the song. The best singer I ever heard sung it, my son Jason.”

Jason Crabb shared, “He’s one of the best song-writers on the planet and I’m so glad he’s my Pop. God bless you all.”

Gaither Vocal Band- Because they’ve captured Southern Gospel Album of the Year for the past 2 years, it’s no surprise that they’d win it again this year. Since they’ve explored new vocal arrangements, the Gaither Vocal Band has captured the attention of diverse Christian music fans. Their win for Southern Gospel Song of the Year was a bit surprising considering its stand against the likes of Ernie Haase & Signature Sound & the Triumphant Quartet, both #1 songs this year on the SN charts.

Gerald Crabb: When the GMA released the Songwriter of the Year nominees, I was a bit surprised to see Wayne Haun & Gerald Crabb’s names among the biggest writers in Christian music. I was more surprised to see Gerald’s, due to the recent level of songs he’s had to record his songs. But, I remembered that he wrote one of the Song of the Year nominees, which could very well explain his nomination. Anyways, Gerald captured the Songwriter of the Year award for the entire field of Christian music. Congratulations to Gerald Crabb, a Southern Gospel songwriter, for winning Christian music’s highest songwriting honor!

If anyone needs evidence of Southern Gospel’s comparison to the other genres in Christian music, last night was a strong supporter. As I said earlier, the Song of the Year has not been a Southern Gospel-directed song since the early 1980s when Sandi Patty won with “We Shall Behold Him.” One may include the other hits like “Via Dolorosa” and “More Than Wonderful”, but she was clearly in the CCM/Inspirational field by then.

Either way, congratulations to all of the Southern Gospel winners in the 2011 GMA Dove Awards! A full list of winners is here.
